San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rico island became a US territory in 1898. But much of the old city was constructed whilst the island was under Spanish control, beginning in 1521.

Joined the queue at the paleta shop (ice lollies), which melted instantly in the boiling hot weather. And bought some local coconut sweets (same as coconut ice) from a market stall.

There were so many cats. Spanish settlers brought them to Puerto Rico and now the old town is full of them.

The whole city is surrounded by a city wall, some of which is still in tact – with a big red gate to get inside.

Construction of the fort, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, began in 1539. Its purpose was to defend the Spanish city. Now it is a preserved UNESCO world heritage site.

With great views around the edge of the island.

The city is surrounded by busy beaches.
